Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot has been kept under wraps for a long time now, and while the first trailer received a positive response from sceptical fans, it didn’t exactly show off the superpowered team in action.

There were at least glimpses of them however, but one character in particular – The Thing – was barely even shown. Well, we now have a first look at the character courtesy of Empire Online, and he looks…interesting. Played by Jamie Bell and brought to life with motion capture effects, this version of The Thing is certainly different to what we saw in the first Fantastic Four movie and quite a bit more “grounded” than the comics.

The new stills also show off what looks like the Negative Zone as well as tests being done on Reed Richards.

The Fantastic Four reboot is a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centres on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

The team is made up of Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic (Miles Teller, Whiplash), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Kate Mara, House of Cards), Johnny Storm/The Human Torch (Michael, B. Jordan, Chronicle), and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Jamie Bell, Billy Elliot). Their main foe? Doctor Doom (Toby Kebbell, Black Mirror).
