Jesse-Eisenberg-in-The-DoubleRichard Ayoade made one of the finest directorial debuts in recent years with 2010’s Submarine, and when he announced he’d be returning behind the camera once more for The Double, we were naturally very excited.

Adapting the original novella by Fyodor Dostoevsky, the film stars Jesse Eisenberg, Noah Taylor, and Mia Wasikowska, and now the first images of Eisenberg and Taylor have debuted online.

The official plot details are largely being kept under wraps, so for the moment, we’ve only got the original synopsis to go on, via Amazon:

“The Double, a surprisingly modern hallucinatory nightmare that foreshadows Kafka and Sartre. A minor official named Goliadkin becomes aware of a mysterious doppelganger – a man who has his name and his face and who gradually and relentlessly begins to displace him with his friends and colleagues. In the dilemma of his increasingly paranoid hero, Dostoevsky makes vividly concrete the inner plurality of consciousness that would become a major theme of his work.”

Wallace Shawn, Rade Serbedzija, James Fox, and Yasmin Paige complete the cast nicely, with Ayoade directing from a script he co-wrote with Avi Korine (Mr. Lonely).

No word yet on when we can look forward to The Double arriving in theatres, but we’re keeping our fingers tightly crossed that it will be early next year. For now, here are the great first images from the film, which you can click through to enlarge.
