After catching the first teaser poster for The Last Stand at Comic-Con last month, we’ve now got our official first look at Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead, marking his first leading role since his return to acting.

Jee-woon Kim (The Good, The Bad, The Weird) is behind the camera, with a strong support beside Schwarzenegger, headed up by Genesis Rodriguez, Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville, Luis Guzmán, Harry Dean Stanton, Peter Stormare, and Jaimie Alexander.

“Sheriff Owens is a man who has resigned himself to a life of fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction after leaving his LAPD post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with failure and defeat after his partner was crippled. After a spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy, the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the hemisphere is hurtling toward the border at 200 mph in a specially outfitted car with a hostage and a fierce army of gang members. He is headed, it turns out, straight for Summerton Junction, where the whole of the U.S. law enforcement will have their last opportunity to make a stand and intercept him before he slips across the border forever. At first reluctant to become involved, and then counted out because of the perceived ineptitude of his small town force, Owens ultimately accepts responsibility for one of the most daring face offs in cinema history.”

USA Today have been kind enough to give us this first look at Schwarzenegger, who said of his choice of signing on for the project,

“I guess I could have started slow and eased into it,” Schwarzenegger adds. “But it felt amazing to be back jumping off buildings, seeing huge explosions, getting in car chases and throwing punches.”

The Last Stand will be released in the US on 18th January, 2013 before heading to UK shores a week later on 25th January, and you can be sure that it’s going to be a healthy start to the new year at the box office. For now, enjoy this first look at our leading action hero, and as usual, you can click to enlarge.

Since graduating, I spend as much time as possible watching films/TV shows, reading books, and listening to music. So getting to write about what I love is nothing short of awesome. Biggest film-related hope for 2014/ever: Guy Ritchie announcing the RocknRolla sequel is finally moving forward.
