The insane success of Pokemon Go has reignited interest in the long running franchise, so it’s easy to understand why The Pokemon Company is now teaming with Legendary Entertainment for a live-action movie. However, it’s probably not the one you’re expecting!

Rather than telling the adventures of Ash Ketchum as he sets out to catch ’em all, their first movie will be Detective Pikachu, a relatively new character who has so far only starred in a Japanese video game (the bizarre trailer for which quickly went viral earlier this year). S

Story details are being kept a secret, but the movie will be fast-tracked for production start in 2017. Universal Pictures will handle distribution of the live-action film outside Japan as it has done with Legendary’s other films for years. The Pokémon Company’s long time movie collaborator, Toho, is predictably going to handle distribution of the film franchise in Japan.

First introduced in Japan in 1996, Pokémon has delighted fans of all ages around the world for two decades. With more than 279 million video games sold worldwide, 21.5 billion TCG cards shipped to 74 countries, and an animated series spanning 19 seasons, Pokémon is one of the most successful entertainment brands in the world, and this movie has potential.

Should Detective Pikachu succeed, expect it to be the first of many new Pokemon movies.
