Jacques Audiard, critically-acclaimed French director of such films as A Prophet and The Beat That Skipped My Heart, is returning for the first time since 2009’s Oscar-nominated A Prophet with Rust & Bone, an adaptation of a short story by Craig Davidson.

We first heard that Marion Cotillard (herself an Oscar winner) had signed on for the lead back in September, and now we have the first French-language trailer for your viewing pleasure, and even though I can’t understand a word, it’s captivating.

Co-written by Audiard and Thomas Bidegain (A Prophet, Where Do We Go Now?), the film also stars Matthias Schoenaerts (the Oscar-nominated Bullhead), and is due out in France on 17th May, which could potentially mean it could get its world premiere at Cannes the day before.

Rust & Bone doesn’t yet have a US or UK release scheduled, but it looks like a powerful film from this first trailer, and so here’s to hoping that we can look forward to it not long after its French premiere. Given the success of Audiard’s films in the past, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to imagine that it could get a US release towards the end of the year priming it for the Oscars. Time will tell. For now, the first trailer.
