Rumoured to be getting its premiere in Rome next month, Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained is set to be a strong contender in the coming awards season, and one of the few yet to be seen by anyone.

We caught the brilliant new trailer for the film last week, and now the first character poster has surfaced, giving us a look at Christoph Waltz as Dr. King Schultz.

“Set in the South two years before the Civil War, DJANGO UNCHAINED stars Academy Award(R)-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award(R)-winner Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles–dead or alive.”

Jamie Foxx takes the lead as the eponymous Django, starring alongside Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Jonah Hill, and Samuel L. Jackson, with a cameo from the director himself.

Tarantino is once more directing from his own script, with the Weinstein brothers on board again as executive producers.

Django Unchained will be released in the US on Christmas Day, before coming to the UK a little later on 18th January in the New Year, by which time we’ll know if it will be heading to the Academy Awards the following month. For now, here’s the great first character poster, and hopefully we’ll have more to bring you soon.
