A day after Disney announced release dates for a wave of new Marvel and Disney movies, we may now what at least one of the latter will be. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the latest addition to the studio’s live-action adaptations of their classic cartoons will be Cruella, a movie based on 101 Dalmations villain Cruella de Vil that is being put on the fast track.

Fifty Shades of Grey writer Kelly Marcel is attached to write the screenplay, and if you’re thinking that she’s something of an unusual choice, bear in mind that she also wrote Saving Mr. Banks for Disney. Aline Brosh McKenna worked on an earlier version of the script.

Very little is known about the direction that Cruella will take in terms of story, but it joins a very long list of animated features they’re bringing back to the big screen in live-action. The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Tink (based on Peter Pan character, Tinker Bell), a Maleficent sequel, and a number of others are all in various stages of production right now!

Of course, this won’t be the first time that Cruella de Vil has appeared in live-action. The iconic villain was played by Glenn Close in  1996’s 101 Dalmatians and the 2000 sequel, 102 Dalmatians. It’ pretty early days for this one, so expect a casting update next year!
