Are you ready for a shared Fast and Furious Universe? Well, like it or not, it sounds like one is on the way! Talking to Variety recently, franchise star and producer Vin Diesel confirmed that the studio is in the early stages of developing a series of prequel and spinoff movies.

“We’ve written out story lines for various characters. We’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s a very rich property and we’re committed to treating it with a lot of class.”

Some time ago, it was reported that Universal were planning to finish the Fast and Furious franchise with one final trilogy, so it makes perfect sense that they’d look to keep it going through movies like this. The actor wouldn’t reveal which characters these may end up focusing on, but one prime candidate has to be Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Hobbs!

Universal Chairman Donna Langley added: “We’re certainly in conversations about how we can expand the franchise now. It’s an ensemble cast and there’s room to bring characters in and out.” They’re definitely looking to expand the franchise then, and Jeff Shell, chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, also had some interesting comments on what’s next.

“You can’t keep having every movie have bigger and bigger stunts forever and ever and ever. Eventually you have to really focus on the story. We’ll still have big stunts but bringing in this amazing storyteller is going to be great. “Vin has a vision in his mind for three more, so let’s get three more done and then see where we are from there. Everything has an end, so I don’t think our expectation is we’re going to have a hundred of them…To me ‘Fast and Furious’ has become no different than a beloved series that comes on every year.”

It could be some time before we learn about the direction the Fast and Furious franchise is going be racing in then, but the bottom line is that it’s not going anywhere, something which is hardly a surprise considering Fast and Furious 7’s massive box office success this year.
