The fate of Pacific Rim 2 has been up in the air for a while now, and despite talk of the sequel being cancelled, the director of the first instalment Guillermo del Toro has maintained that the follow-up will happen. As it turns out, Legendary Pictures are indeed moving forward with another movie, but there’s going to be someone else at the helm; Steven S. DeKnight.

The latest draft of the screenplay was penned by Jon Spahts (Prometheus), and while Del Toro’s commitments to Fantastic Voyage and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark have stopped him from directing, the filmmaker will remain involved to at least some extent as a producer.

DeKnight served as showrunner on the first season of Daredevil and helmed the finale. While he doesn’t have feature credits as director, he has plenty of small screen experience with shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dollhouse, and Smallville (an interesting mix).

Pacific Rim divided critics and was a box office disappointment in North America. However, it did well in China and ended up grossing over $400 million worldwide. With a smaller budget, a sequel stands the chance of being a much bigger hit, but before you go getting to excited, it still does’t have a release date! However, one might just following in the coming weeks.
