Fede Alvarez has been making waves with his Evil Dead remake since its debut at SXSW this month, and I can’t wait for it to hit cinemas in a few weeks.

The film is essentially the first big horror movie of the year, and with so much positive buzz surrounding it, it’s definitely one to get excited about.

We’ve seen plenty of brilliant things from Evil Dead already, and now a short new trailer has debuted ahead of the film’s appearance at WonderCon at the end of the month, along with the first clip.

In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

Jane Levy takes the lead here, with the original male role played by Bruce Campbell rewritten for a female. And starring alongside her is Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci, and Elizabeth Blackmore, with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell both returning to produce.

Alvarez makes his feature directorial debut, directing from a script he co-wrote with past collaborator Rodo Sayagues Mendez, with Diablo Cody hired for a revision last year.

Alvarez has said that a sequel is already being developed, and that it will be 100% original, rather than continuing to remake Raimi’s original films. If everything goes well like we expect it to next month, Sony could have a very successful new horror franchise on their hands.

Evil Dead will be released in the US on 5th April, with its UK release date set for 19th April. I can’t wait. This looks like it could well be the horror film to beat this year.
