With Channing Tatum playing hard ball with Fox over his contract and director Rupert Wyatt parting ways with the studio over creative differences, there have now been at least a couple of occasions where it looked like X-Men spinoff Gambit was going to end up being scrapped.

However, determined to make it happen, Fox gave Tatum what he wanted and recently started the hunt for a new filmmaker to take the helm. While a number of names were considered – Joe Cornish, Shane Black and, F. Gary Gray are said to have been among them – their final choice is definitely surprising, though one it’s easy to get very excited about.

Edge of Tomorrow, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman is in final negotiations to take the helm of Gambit, and his action credentials make him ideal for a comic book movie, you’d think he’d have ended up taking on a slightly more high profile project. Of course, Fox is keen to make Gambit their next Wolverine, so big things are no doubt on the horizon for the character who is rumoured to appear in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Gambit is a charming master thief turned X-Man. He possesses the mutant ability to charge inanimate objects with kinetic energy, causing them to explode, he is also extremely agile because of his powers. Gambit’s signature move is throwing charged playing cards.

Gambit is among the many superhero movies being released next year, and you can learn more about the character by clicking here. What do you think about Liman taking the helm?
