It was revealed last month that Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt had decided against helming X-Men spinoff Gambit because of creative differences with Fox, but with Channing Tatum and Lea Seydoux still attached to star, a new filmmaker is needed.

Some fans have been worrying that the movie’s loss of director will spell doom for the project, but according to Deadline, the studio is eyeing some impressive talent in the form of Edge of Tomorrow and The Bourne Identity’s Doug Liman. It’s Tatum who’s said to be keen on hiring the director, but whether or not he’ll actually be able to is obviously another matter.

Liman just wrapped Tom Cruise starrer Mena, but has Edge of Tomorrow and Luna Park on the cards, so his possible involvement with Gambit will ultimately come down to timing.

Still, Liman’s involvement with Gambit would certainly go a long way in building excitement and might help get sceptical fans on board with this X-Men character receiving his own solo outing. Written by Josh Zemuter from a treatment by Chris Claremont, Gambit is set to be released on October 7th, 2016. You can learn more about the character by clicking here.
