Edge-of-Tomorrow-Poster-sliceWhen Warner Bros. launched the first trailer for Doug Liman’s Edge of Tomorrow at the end of last year, it was clear that we’d be in for a rollercoaster-ride of a blockbuster this summer.

That first trailer naturally earned itself a spot on our Top 25 Trailers of 2013, and we’ve been looking forward to what would come next. With just a few more months to go before it arrives, we’re due a new look at the sci-fi/actioner, and Warner Bros. haven’t disappointed.

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt take the lead alongside Bill Paxton, Kick Gurry, Dragomir Mrsic, Charlotte Riley, Jonas Armstrong, and Franz Drameh.

Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) is at the helm, with Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) co-writing the script with Jez and John-Henry Butterworth (Fair Game), based on the original light novel, All You Need Is Kill, by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.

Blunt has very much deservedly been on the rise in recent years, putting in fantastic performances in independent and blockbuster movies alike, including Looper, The Adjustment Bureau, and My Sister’s Sister. A film like Edge of Tomorrow certainly cements her status as one of the best-known talents of her generation, and I can’t wait to see what she brings to the table. She looks fantastic here.

Edge of Tomorrow will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on 30th May in the UK, with its US release date following shortly after on 6th June.
