Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man film has long been in development with Marvel. It was originally to be part of the first phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe back when Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk were being developed, before the studio switched gears to go with Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger.
Recent months have re-ignited the rumour mill that Wright’s project has been back in development, and THR report that in the middle of this month, the director shot for just under a week to get the look and tone of the film, and to see how convincing the character’s powers would look on screen.
“Ant-Man is based on Marvel hero Hank Pym, a scientist who discovered a way to alter his size. He used a helmet to control armies of ants and also was a founding member of the Avengers.”
Wright is best known for his work with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, directing Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, with the final instalment of their trilogy, The World’s End, shooting this autumn. And he of course also directed Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, one of the best films in recent years not to find the audience it deserved at the box office, and co-wrote last year’s The Adventures of Tintin alongside Joe Cornish, with whom he’s been working on the Ant-Man script since its inception.
The Marvel rumour mill was set alight last night with a report surfacing that their as-yet-unannounced May 2014 film would be Guardians of the Galaxy, which would then lead into The Avengers 2 in 2015 – awesome news, to say the least.
If that’s true, then we may still have some time to go before Ant-Man comes to the fore. Hopefully we’ll know more soon; with Marvel heading to Comic-Con, everyone’s waiting for an official announcement.
One way or another, we can look forward to seeing Wright’s work soon though, with The World’s End expected to land sometime next year, completing the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, which I’m as excited about as The Dark Knight Rises’ epic conclusion to Christopher and Jonathan Nolan’s Batman trilogy.
