It was earlier this year that Iron Man 3 and The Nice Guys director Shane Black revealed that he wanted Dwayne Johnson to play Doc Savage, but it’s now been made official by The Rock himself. His full statement can be found in the Facebook post below, and it’s clear that this is yet another project the wrestler turned actor is very excited and passionate about.

Doc Savage is basically the world’s first superhero, and debuted in the pages of pulp novels written way back in 1933. Trained from birth by his scientist father to have superhuman abilities, Savage is a physician, surgeon, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher, and musician with incredible strength, endurance, a photographic memory, martial arts mastery as well as a master of disguise. He’s been nicknamed the “Man of Bronze.”

While Black will next turn his attention to The Predator, he’s going to direct Doc Savage from a script he’s co-written with Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. A release date has yet to be set, though you have to believe this one is going to be a priority for Sony Pictures.

Johnson of course remains as busy as ever, with Central Intelligence, Rampage, Shazam, Baywatch, Fast and Furious 8, and almost countless others all on the way in the near future.
