Ashely-Judd-and-Morgan-Freeman-in-Dolphin-Tale-2Picking up a few years on from the first hit film, Dolphin Tale 2 will be heading into cinemas towards the end of the year, reuniting the original cast for the next step in Winter’s story.

The first film was of course based on the true story of the dolphin, Winter, renowned for her prosthetic tale, and it took just shy of 0m. at the global box office. And with just a few more months to go before her return to the big screen, Warner Bros. have launched the first trailer for the sequel, promising to bring more true stories to life from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

It has been several years since young Sawyer Nelson (Gamble) and the dedicated team at the Clearwater Marine Hospital, headed by Dr. Clay Haskett (Connick, Jr.), rescued Winter. With the help of Dr. Cameron McCarthy (Freeman), who developed a unique prosthetic tail for the injured dolphin, they were able to save her life.

Yet their fight is not over. Winter’s surrogate mother, the very elderly dolphin Panama, has passed away, leaving Winter without the only poolmate she has ever known. However, the loss of Panama may have even greater repercussions for Winter, who, according to USDA regulations, cannot be housed alone, as dolphins’ social behavior requires them to be paired with other dolphins. Time is running out to find a companion for her before the team at Clearwater loses their beloved Winter to another aquarium.

Harry Connick, Jr. leads the cast alongside Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, Nathan Gamble, Cozi Zuehlsdorff, Kris Kristofferson, and Austin Highsmith, with award-winning surfer Bethany Hamilton also appearing in the film as herself.

Charles Martin Smith is back in the director’s chair, directing from his own script this time around.

Dolphin Tale 2 will be released in the US on September 19th, almost exactly three years after the release of the first film, with its UK release date set for a month later on 17th October.
