The Netflix corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to get more and more impressive, with the latest addition being Broadchurch and former Doctor Who star David Tennant. He’s joined the cast of A.K.A. Jessica Jones, the second of five Marvel TV shows which will premiere on the online streaming service.

The others are Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders, though the latter three will likely not be with us until 2016 and beyond. Marvel have confirmed that A.K.A. Jessica Jones will premiere in 2015.

Tennant will play Killgrave, an enigmatic figure from Jessica’s past, whose reappearance will send shockwaves through the former super hero’s world. He’s better known as The Purple Man, and has the power to persuade people to do anything he commands. Tennant will star opposite Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter, who will play Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. The series was developed by showrunner Melissa Rosenberg.

“I’m so honored and excited by the prospect of David inhabiting this multifaceted character,” said Rosenberg in a statement released today by Marvel to announce the casting. “He can deliver the most heart-wrenching moment to the driest of lines, and all points in between. He’ll make Kilgrave a truly original villain.”

“Anyone familiar with David’s work knows he brings an incredible level of dedication to any role he inhabits, a level we knew we would need from the man playing Kilgrave,” said Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of TV. “While most know him for his roles as a hero, we can’t wait to unleash a whole new side of this talented actor.”

In the series, after a tragic ending to her short-lived super hero stint, Jessica Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City.
