Another Disney fairy tale is being brought to the big screen in live-action, with Pinocchio the latest set to get the reboot treatment. However, this version will apparently be based only “loosely” on the classic tale.

There are no specific details on what that will entail, but like Maleficent, it could be that this movie offers a different take or perspective on the well-known tale. The fact that Guillermo del Toro is writing and directing a stop motion version may have also played a role in Disney’s decision to head in a new direction.

Peter Hedges is apparently writing the movie which is based on 1883 novel The Adventures Of Pinocchio.

Pinocchio has been adapted both in animation and live-action a number of times over the years with the original Disney cartoon released in 1940. There was even a 1996 horror version titled Pinocchio’s Revenge! This is the latest in a long line of live-action adaptations from Disney. What classic cartoon could be next?

Others include Bill Condon’s Beauty and the Beast (which will star Emma Watson and Dan Stevens), The Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland 2, and perhaps most surprisingly, a live-action Dumbo from Tim Burton. It was also recently announced that the studio is moving ahead with Mulan and Winnie the Pooh as well.
