Naomi-Watts-in-DianaComing off the back of her Oscar-nominated performance in The Impossible, Naomi Watts will return to cinemas later this year in a role that is very much primed for another run at the Oscars, with Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Diana marking the first major biopic of Princess Diana since her death in 1997.

With its UK release date sitting nicely on the horizon, the first teaser trailer has been released online, painting a rather beautiful portrait of the People’s Princess.

When Princess Diana flew to Pakistan in May 1997, she went to meet the family of Dr. Hasnat Khan, the man she wanted to marry. One of the most famous and beautiful women in the world, she hoped to persuade Dr. Khan’s mother that she would make a suitable wife for her son. Had she succeeded, the events of that summer might have been very different…

A love story about family, friendship and the calamity of fame.

Watts stars opposite Naveen Andrews as Dr. Hasnat Khan and Cas Anvar as Dodi Fayed.

Hirschbiegel (Downfall) is directing from a script penned by Stephen Jeffreys.

Diana is set to be released in the UK on 20th September, which should give it a strong position ahead of the BAFTAs early next year. No word yet on the film’s US release date, but I have a feeling it might be a little later in the year, priming it for an Oscar campaign. And I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it makes its debut at Venice or Toronto. (My money is on the latter.)
