Despicable Me was a phenomenal success back in 2010, and with Despicable Me 2 looking to be one of the biggest films of 2013, we’ve now got even more to look forward to in the years to come.

Illumination Entertainment and Universal have announced that the little yellow minions – beloved by everyone – will be getting their own as-yet-untitled feature film in 2014.

“The film is an original story that will introduce new characters and reprise others that originated in Despicable Me, but the focus is on the antics of the yellow fellows as they interact with human characters.”

Pierre Coffin (Despicable Me) will direct, with Kyle Balda (Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax) on board as co-director, with the screenplay already written by Brian Lynch (Hop, Puss in Boots).

Coffin and his Despicable Me co-director Chris Renaud are set to reprise their roles as the voice of the minions, and I’m really hoping that Jemaine Clement will be back too. Because Jemain Clement is awesome.

Production is currently underway on Despicable Me 2, and then the team will roll straight into making the spin-off, getting the ball rolling now with pre-production whilst the sequel is in production.

The as-yet-untitled spin-off is set to be released in 2014, and will presumably be set for release that summer. It has instantly soared to the top of my most anticipated films of that year, and even though there could be a challenge in the little dudes’ lack of speaking English, I remain hopeful that this will be amazing.

Before then, Despicable Me 2 will be released on 28th June, 2013 in the UK, followed by 3rd July, 2013 in the US, no doubt making for a big box office as usual for that first weekend of July. For now, here’s the brilliant teaser trailer for the sequel, featuring those beloved minions. Enjoy.
