Well, this is a pleasant surprise! It has been revealed today that Enemy and Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve is expected to helm the long talked about Blade Runner sequel. Sir Ridley Scott recently revealed that he had decided not to direct the movie and that a new filmmaker was being looked for.

Based on his previous projects, Villeneuve is an ideal choice and should bring something unique to the table.

It’s mentioned that principle photography on the sequel will begin next summer. Hampton Fancher (the co-writer of Blade Runner) and Michael Green (Green Lantern, Prometheus 2) penned the current version of the screenplay which is based on an idea by Fancher and Scott. Plot details are still scarce, but it apparently takes place decades after the conclusion of the first movie. More will hopefully be revealed soon.

Perhaps the most exciting reveal is the fact that Harrison Ford is in talks to reprise his role as Rick Deckard, and it sounds like he’ll definitely be back based on the wording used by the trades that broke the news.

Before we see his Blade Runner sequel, Villeneuve will release crime thriller Sicario, a movie which stars Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benecio Del Toro. Harrison Ford will be seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
