With Deadpool expected to open with upwards of $65 million in North America this weekend, it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that 20th Century Fox has already greenlit a sequel. It was previously rumoured that the studio are planning on releasing it in the slot held by Fantastic Four next year, but that hasn’t been confirmed just yet and would mean they’d have to rush!

Regardless, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are set to return to pen the screenplay. Director Tim Miller hasn’t been officially signed up just yet, but it’s said that studio is keen to reunite the same creative team from the first movie.

Based on how positive the reviews have been so far, that shouldn’t come as a huge surprise!

Ryan Reynolds fought for years to make Deadpool a reality, so the fact the studio is now willing to greenlight a sequel before the first movie is even in cinemas is pretty amazing.

What’s in store for us in the next one is tough to say, though Reynolds did recent reveal that he would like to bring X-Force to the big screen via Deadpool. “There’s so much material to mine in just the X-Men universe,” he told Comic Book Resources in a recent chat. “In the future, if we’re doing a bunch more ‘Deadpool’ movies, we’re really going to explore the X-Men a lot. We’ll see. And maybe X-Force. X-Force is my priority. I really want to get that in.”
