GothamDeadline reports that Judge Dredd and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer director Danny Cannon has signed on to both direct and executive produce Warner Bros. TV and Fox’s Gotham pilot. The project comes from The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller and already has a series commitment from the network. They’re prioritising it after an intense bidding war last year.

While Cannon may initially seem like an unlikely choice, he launched CSI: Miami, Alcatraz, Nikita, and The Tomorrow People’s pilots in the same roles he will serve in for Gotham. The Tomorrow People debuted on The CW last year to strong ratings and launched on E4 in the UK earlier this month.

Gotham tells the story of a young James Gordon (played by Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy) and the villains who made the city famous, although it’s unknown whether it will have any connections to any of Warner Bros.’ other small screen projects or the rebooted Caped Crusader who will be played by Ben Affleck in 2015’s Batman vs. Superman. A recent casting call indicated that Bruce Wayne will appear in the pilot, but as a child. As a result, the main focus of Gotham is believed to be Gordon’s hunt for the killer of Thomas and Martha Wayne.
