The LEGO Movie was wrongly snubbed at this year’s Academy Awards, but a sequel to the hugely successful first movie is on the way regardless. However, while they will be back to write and produce, Phil Lord and Chris Miller won’t be directing. Instead, it will be first time feature director Rob Schrab who takes over.

He’s best known for helming some of the best episodes of Community, and his other credits include The Mindy Project, Parks and Recreation, and The Sarah Silverman Program. The latter resulted in him landing a WGA Award nomination while he scored an Emmy for his work on the 81st annual Academy Awards.

“’The LEGO Movie’ captivated critics and audiences on a global scale with its irresistible blend of humor, imagination and fun. Warner Bros. is excited to build our relationship with The LEGO Group with this new adventure, and we join them in welcoming the multi-talented Rob Schrab to the LEGO family as he takes the helm of ‘The LEGO Movie Sequel,” Warner Bros. executive Greg Silverman said in a statement today.

Miller and Lord meanwhile added the following: “We are so excited to collaborate with Rob. He is a comedy genius, a visual savant, and we have been stalking him for years. No one works harder than Rob, and his aesthetic, combined with his sense of humor, bring a strong, unique, thoughtful, and passionately nerdy voice to this project. People who know him are slapping their foreheads today and saying, ‘Of course!'”

There’s no firm release date for The LEGO Movie sequel just yet, but Ninjago will reach us on September 23rd, 2016, and the untitled LEGO Batman spinoff will be released in May 2017. That’s a lot of LEGO!
