We’ve heard a lot of rumours about the second season of True Detective, and a number of them have now been confirmed by HBO. Colin Farrell actually revealed that he would star in the series during a recent interview, so it could have been that which has prompted the US cable network to make if official.

Production is set to begin later this Autumn in California, and the official logline for season two reveals that three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto will return to pen all eight episodes of the drama which won a number of awards and received unanimous critical acclaim earlier this year. Justin Lin will helm the first two episodes. Who will follow him for the other six remains to be seen, but a number of directors are expected.

The first character details reveal that Colin Farrell will play Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.

Vince Vaughn meanwhile (an unexpected casting choice) is Frank Semyon, a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.
