Variety reveals that Kick-Ass and Carrie star Chloe Moretz is set to take on the title role in Working Title and Universal’s upcoming live-action take on The Little Mermaid. Not much is known about this version of the classic Hans Christian Andersen story – which was turned into a very popular animated movie by Disney – but this is definitely an interesting bit of casting.

Moretz has apparently been the frontrunner for the role of The Little Mermaid for a while now, but original director Sofia Coppola (who left the project earlier this year due to creative differences) was apparently never keen on casting the young actress who is currently shooting Bad Neighbours 2 and will next be seen in Young Adult adaptation The Fifth Wave.

While the studio always intended on casting Moretz, they’ve only made it official now because a writer has been found to do one final pass on The Little Mermaid’s screenplay.

That will be Richard Curtis. He’s obviously best known for Love Actually and Four Weddings and a Funeral, and it should be very interesting to see what he brings to the table with this classic story following a mermaid who wished to become human after falling in love with a man she saved from drowning. Will this be a hit or another Pan? For now, time will tell…
