X-Men: Days of Future Past producer Lauren Shuler Donner recently revealed that Channing Tatum will play Gambit in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, and though many people took this as confirmation, it sounds as if the 22 Jump Street and Magic Mike star hasn’t signed on the dotted line just yet.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Tatum again expressed his desire to play the Marvel comic book character, but made it clear that while the deal is close to being done, it’s not official just yet!

“I hope to be joining — everything’s not done yet. I’ve obviously been in talks, and we’re on the one yard line. I’m always afraid of being like, ‘Yes it’s totally happening’ and then it doesn’t happen. It’s always really awkward. But yeah, I’m dying to do it.”

So, it’s likely he will star in X-Men: Apocalypse, but not guaranteed as of right now. It has been reported recently that the plan is for the character to be introduced in that movie before being granted his own spin-off movie. John Carter star Taylor Kitsch played the character in the terrible X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the character, GambitĀ  is a charming master thief turned X-Man. He possesses the mutant ability to charge inanimate objects with kinetic energy, causing them to explode, he is also extremely agile because of his powers. Gambit’s signature move is throwing charged playing cards.
