Comic book fans were horrified to learn that the directors of You, Me And Dupree had been hired to helm Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but the sequel proved everyone wrong, and is widely considered one of Marvel Studios’ best movies. The duo will next take on Captain America: Civil War, set for release in 2016.

However, the Russo Brothers have now signed a three year, first look deal with Sony Pictures which will see Joe and Anthony develop “both new and ambitious material” for the studio. With Spider-Man set to be introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the next Captain America movie, could this deal have something to do with that? Not necessarily, but there’s certainly a possibility that they’re connected.

Leaked “Sony Hack” emails revealed that the Russo Brothers offered to produce Sony’s Spider-Man reboot when the initial talks between them and Marvel broke down. With Drew Goddard being lined up to write and direct, could these two take over from Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach? (both of whom have been ousted)

The links between the new Spider-Man franchise and the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes it seem very likely that they would produce, especially as the Russos are seemingly being groomed to take over the reigns of The Avengers franchise from Joss Whedon. The brothers are rumoured to helm Infinity War.

This is a lot of speculation for now, but it’s exciting to think about either way. Even if this agreement with Sony has nothing to do with superheroes, seeing what these two come up with next should be great fun.
