BIFA Logo 220x150 British Independent Film Awards Nominations Are InWith the London Film Festival now over, a swathe of summer releases coming out on DVD, and London’s Regent Street decked out in cartoon character-based lights, it’s that time of year again – Awards Season.

And while we’re still a few months away from the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Oscars (although not the ‘For Your Consideration’ campaigns), the nominees for the British Independent Film Awards were announced yesterday. We’ve posted the full list below.

While it would be hard to fault any of the films nominated in terms of quality, what you may notice is that some of the films nominated were released at the beginning of this year (Submarine for instance), while some (Wild Bill springs to mind) won’t see the light of day until next year. We asked Elliot Grove, the founder of the awards, who explained that the films that hadn’t been distributed could qualify if they had been screened at a UK festival.

We then asked Grove to clarify what made a film ‘independent’. He told us, “[Maximum] Budget is £15 million, but no studio pictures. No single source finance, unless the money comes entirely from your mother”. He followed by explaining his reason for starting the awards, “It’s all about building confidence, and when a filmmaker has confidence, sometimes they might have that little extra push to do something else. What’s also, equally important is that the general public, when they see the awards, think, ‘that must be a pretty good film’ and they see it, or go and rent the DVD”.
