Killing Them Softly has long been one of my most anticipated films of the year, and this brilliant first trailer proves exactly why it has.

Brad Pitt returns to work once more with Andrew Dominik, following 2007’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and after debuting at Cannes this year to immensely positive reviews, this excellent and eagerly-awaited first trailer has made its way online.

“When their poker game is knocked off by petty thieves, the Mob calls in their best enforcer, Jackie Cogan, to make things right. Under the eye of a mysterious driver, Jackie must track down and punish those responsible for the heist. His assignment is complicated by those he comes up against along the way – an aging, drunken hit man, some bumbling local gangsters, and the ladies’ man who ran the ill-fated game.”

Starring alongside Pitt is a great supporting cast, headed up by the rising star Scoot McNairy, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, Ben Mendelsohn, Richard Jenkins, Sam Shepard, and Slaine.

Previously titled Cogan’s Trade, Dominik is directing from his own script, adapted from the original novel by George V. Higgins.

Killing Them Softly will be released on 19th October by The Weinstein Company in the US, which could well indicate an awards campaign for the film later this year. As things stand, the film is set to be released on 21st September in the UK, but that could potentially be pushed back following the later US release. But I really hope not, because I can’t wait to see this. Here’s the brilliant first trailer to show you why.
