After what’s felt like endless speculation and rumours, we may finally have our Captain Marvel! Variety has revealed that Oscar winning actress Brie Larson (Room) is in early talks to play the character, and while negotiations are obviously still ongoing, she’s said to be keen to take on the role. After so much awards success, teaming up with Marvel is a smart move.

Captain Marvel isn’t set to be released until 2019, but Marvel needs to cast the character now because she’ll be part of Avengers: Infinity War, and that starts shooting this Autumn.

Inside Out’s Meg LeFauve is writing the screenplay alongside Guardians of the Galaxy scribe Nicole Perlman, and while a director hasn’t been announced just yet, it’s been said that Niki Caro (McFarland, USA) and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) are among the contenders.

We’ll have to wait and see on the front, but it’s impossible to find fault with Marvel choosing Larson to play this hero. Names like Emily Blunt, Kathryn Winnick, and Rebecca Ferguson have done the rounds on both wish lists and rumour posts over the past few years, making Larson something of a leftfield – but inspired and utterly fantastic – choice by the studio.

Many thanks to Superhero Hype for the image of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel above!
