Regardless of the recent ubiquity of Jack Sparrow Johnny Depp will always be worth watching. Consistently one of the most interesting actors of his day, moving from role to role like a catmeleon (like a cat and a chameleon) his latest film looks to be one of his most sinister choices so far.

Scott Cooper’s Black Mass has Depp as an underground figure swept up in a shaky alliance with the US government to target a mutual enemy. Things go wrong, as they are wont to do and this new trailer shows off exactly how wrong they go.

Depp has a fine cast alongside him, with Joel Egerton sporting a handsome barnet and Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Jesse Plemons, Peter Sarsgaard and Dakota Johnson along for the ride.

It looks great, we need a decent slice of evil Depp in our lives. The film premieres in Venice in September and hits cinemas on the 18th of that month in the US, we here in the UK get it later, on the 13th of November.

In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster Jimmy Bulger (Depp) to collaborate with the FBI in order to eliminate their common enemy: the Italian mob.  The drama tells the story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement while consolidating his power and becoming one of the most ruthless and dangerous gangsters in Boston history.
