Though it appeared as if Joaquin Phoenix was going to be Marvel’s Doctor Strange, he decided against starring in the movie and the hunt for someone to play the Sorcerer Supreme has continued ever since.

A number of names have come up, including Colin Farrell, Tom Hardy, Keanu Reevers and many more.

However, it’s one of the first actors who was rumoured to be in the running for the role who will play Doctor Strange according to Deadline; British actor Benedict Cumberbatch! He is of course best known for starring in Sherlock, not to mention Star Trek Into Darkness, War Horse and the upcoming The Imitation Game.

Deadline broke the news and now we’re just waiting on the official press release from Marvel as it very much sounds like a done deal. Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) wrote the script and Scott Derrickson (Deliver Us From Evil) is directing. While a release date hasn’t been made official, 2016 is strongly rumoured.

Though the site says he’s in “final negotiations”, some of the other trades caution that the deal may not work out due to Cumberbatch’s schedule. We’ll have to wait and see, but we seemingly have our Doctor Strange!
