The first eight episode season of The Missing came to an end on BBC One, and while we won’t spoil anything for you here, it was a shocking and powerful ending to what has been a superb eight hours of TV.

The Missing starred James Nesbitt, Frances O’Connor, Tchéky Karyo, and Jason Flemyng, but like HBO’s True Detective, season two will actually focus on a new case and a completely new cast of actors and characters.

Harry and Jack Williams will return as writers, with events once again unfolding over two time periods. “We always knew the story of Oliver Hughes would have an ending,” they said in a joint statement. “But in writing the first series we found there were many themes and issues we didn’t have the chance to explore.”

The BBC series was produced in conjunction with US network Starz, and the latter’s managing director Carmi Zlotnik had this to say about bringing back The Missing for a second season. “The remarkably talented Williams brothers crafted a beautifully complex and heart wrenching story with ‘The Missing’ and while the story, character and locations will be different in this new iteration, we anticipate the same captivating long-form storytelling and character development that critics and viewers have responded so well to.”

Despite all the talk of new characters, it’s interesting that Tchéky Karyo provides the voiceover in the teaser trailer below. Could there be a chance that we’ll see more of Julien Baptiste? We’ll have to wait and see!
