Coming in the company of some of the biggest blockbusters this summer, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter sees Timur Bekmambetov step back behind the camera once more for an adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s original novel of the same name.

The first trailer for the film surfaced back in February, and though I was admittedly a bit sceptical about the project at first, I’ve been converted by the few things we’ve seen before and since.

A great new featurette has now debuted online, courtesy of Apple, in which screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith – who adapts his own novel with Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes) – talks with director Bekmambetov and producer Tim Burton about the nature of Lincoln’s character and its origins in the vein of a superhero figure, cut between footage from the film itself.

“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter explores the secret life of our greatest president, and the untold story that shaped our nation. Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (director of Wanted) bring a fresh and visceral voice to the bloodthirsty lore of the vampire, imagining Lincoln as history’s greatest hunter of the undead.”

Benjamin Walker stars as the presidential lead, with a brilliant supporting cast that includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead*, Dominic Cooper, Alan Tudyk, Anthony Mackie, and Rufus Sewell.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter will be released in 3D on 2nd August in the UK, coming a few weeks later than in the US, where it’s set for a 22nd June release.

And of course, before either of those dates, we first have the pairing of Tim Burton and Seth Grahame-Smith to look forward to next weekend with the release of Dark Shadows, which has its own fantastic cast led by Johnny Depp. For all our coverage of Burton’s Dark Shadows, you can click here.

And for now, the great new featurette for Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. If you’d care to watch it in HD, you can do so at Apple here.
