Kevin Feige recently confirmed rumours that Marvel had approached Selma’s Ava DuVernay to direct Black Panther, but the filmmaker has now revealed that she’s decided not to helm the movie for Marvel Studios.

“I’m not signing on to direct Black Panther,” DuVernay confirmed in a recent interview with Essence. “I think I’ll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be. Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they’re fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me.”

Not everyone is comfortable with Marvel’s method of movie making. After all, they have the say on the final cut, a decision which Thor: The Dark World’s Alan Taylor has since revealed he was not remotely happy with.

“I loved meeting Chadwick [Boseman] and writers and all the Marvel execs,” DuVernay  added. “In the end, it comes down to story and perspective. And we just didn’t see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later.” That’s a valid point, and no doubt a decision best for the director and Black Panther. It’s still a shame though, as everyone was excited about what she’d bring to the table.

She does however remain positive about Marvel’s plans for the movie. “I love the character of Black Panther, the nation of Wakanda and all that that could be visually. I wish them well and will be first in line to see it.”
