We’ve seen many cinematic first contacts. Roland Emmerich’s recent retread of Independence Day reminded us that his first attempt is one of the more bombastic entry into this sci-fi niche. Childhood’s End is a rousing literary depiction of strangers from another world, and the recent TV mini series did a good job of bringing the bewildering spectacle to life. Plus Charles Dance was a devil – which was aces.

All eyes are on the skies then for director Denis Villeneuve’s take on the trope. Currently hard at work on the Blade Runner sequel Villeneuve is one of the most exciting directors working today and Arrival looks to be another winner.

The first trailer dropped just a few moments ago and it shows off Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker taking their first steps in a larger world.

But first – how about a synopsis?

When mysterious spacecrafts touch down across the globe, an elite team – lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.

The film is due to land in November, here’s your trailer.
