We’ve known that New Mutants is in the works for a while now, but the movie finally has a release date and has officially added two long rumoured cast members today. Those are Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Magik – the mystically powered sister of Colossus – and Wolfsbane, a girl who can turn into a wolf.

As of right now, the plan is for New Mutants to start shooting in July. Josh Boone is going to be at the helm and penned the screenplay alongside longtime writing partner Knate Lee.

That gives the filmmaker and Fox plenty of time to find the rest of the cast for the X-Men spiniff. The team includes characters like the Native American Dani Moonster, Brazilian Sunspot, the Kentucky-bornĀ Cannonball, and an alien named Warlock. Wolfsbane is Scottish and Magik is Russian, so this is a very international and diverse team of heroes.

We don’t currently know how New Mutants will link up to the X-Men movies, but it’s been confirmed that James McAvoy’s Professor X will not be making an appearance. That’s despite past rumours saying he would and likely mean this stands apart from X-Men: Dark Phoenix. With any luck, though, there will at least be some sort of mention of the X-Men!
