Cars 2 is building up a typically fine head of steam as its release date approaches. I was not a great fan of the first film, which felt like a rather obvious indulging of John Lassater’s personal proclivities, rather than a project likely to carry universal appeal.

You can catch up on all of our coverage so far here, from which we can see that this film promises to be a wholly different beast to the first, replacing an elegaic paean to a lost love of the open highway with a more bombastic international espionage thriller. Frankly, in my book that’s a step in the right direction. Pixar made one of the very best superhero movies ever with The Incredibles and it will be great to see what they can do onceĀ againĀ in the action-adventure genre with their typically strong “story is key” credentials.

Today’s contribution to the Cars 2 build-up is this clip, which splendidly shows tow-truck Mater using a voice-activated disguise program. He makes an excellent monster truck, though not how we might expect.

My kids are massively looking forward to this one and I think I am too. It hits US screens on 24th June and then arrives in the UK on 22nd July.

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
