Back in September, we heard the excellent news that Anne Hathaway was circling the female lead for Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse, the upcoming sci-fi/action blockbuster adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson’s best-selling novel.

Hathaway has recently been speaking with Empire, and has now confirmed her involvement with the project:

“If Robopocalypse happens I will be in it… and I believe it’s quite real, though you never want to hang your hat on anything.”

Chris Hemsworth and Ben Whishaw have also been in talks to star in the film, and the three would certainly make for a very interesting trio.

The ever-brilliant Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, The Cabin in the Woods) has penned the script from which Spielberg will direct.

Courtesy of Waterstones, here’s the original synopsis for Wilson’s novel:

“Roughly twenty years from now, our technological marvels unite and turn against us. A childlike but massively powerful artificial intelligence known as Archos comes online…and kills the man who created it. This first act of betrayal leads Archos to gain control over the global network of machines and technology that regulates everything from transportation to utilities, defence and communications. In the early months, sporadic glitches are noticed by a handful of unconnected humans – from a senator and single mother disconcerted by her daughter’s “smart” toys, to a lonely Japanese bachelor, to an isolated U.S. soldier – but most are unaware of the growing rebellion until it is far too late. Then, in the span of minutes, at a moment known later in history as Zero Hour, every mechanical device in our world rebels, setting off the Robot War that both decimates and – for the first time in history – unites humankind.”

Plot details are being kept under wraps for the adaptation, and it’s thought that Goddard’s script will be deviating from the original material, which means all bets are off.

Hathaway has of course most recently been seen in one of this year’s biggest blockbusters, The Dark Knight Rises, and will next be seen in Tom Hooper’s eagerly-awaited Les Misérables, with much Oscar buzz surrounding her anticipated performance.

Robopocalypse is currently slated for release on 25th April, 2014, with principal photography expected to begin in early 2013. If that’s the case, hopefully we’ll have some more concrete casting news to bring you soon. More as we get it.
