Andrew Niccol has delivered us some decent slices of intelligent sci-fi in his time, with Gattaca and The Truman Show looking toward a bleak and completely believable future, the man likes his shades of dystopia.

There’s news tonight that Amanda Seyfried has been cast as the female lead for I’m.mortal, Niccol’s film which posits a future in which the aging gene is switched off thus creating a population problem – cue social commentary by way of time becoming a currency to negotiate and buy.

Fox picked up the writer/director’s latest peek into the future and there’s a nice Logan’s Run feel to this one, here’s Variety’s take on the story,

In [the film]  time has become the currency. The rich are immortal, while the rest struggle to stay alive.

When a rebel from the ghetto is falsely accused of murdering a wealthy man for his time, he is forced to go on the run with beautiful hostage (Seyfried). Together, this duo rages against the system, living minute to minute. They discover that love is more powerful than all the time in the world.

With Duncan Jones’s Source Code coming our way and Inception almost here as well as the aforementioned Logan’s Run remake it’s good to see the thread of intelligent sci-fi continuing from last year’s District 9 and Moon, each one fighting off the onslaught of the scourge of Transformers.
