While promoting the rather brilliant looking Ex Machina, writer and director Alex Garland has revealed that we may still get a third instalment of the 28… zombie franchise. Danny Boyle directed the well-received 28 Days Later, while Juan Carlos Fresnadillo helmed the sequel 28 Weeks Later starring Jeremy Renner.

Garland wrote the first and served as an executive producer on the follow-up, a role he may one again take on for the long rumoured third instalment – 28 Months Later – which may now finally be in the works!

“We’ve just started talking about it seriously,” he revealed in a recent interview when asked if there’s been any movement on the threequel. “We’ve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility. It’s complicated. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why it’s complicated, which are boring so I won’t go into, but there’s a possibility.”

So, 28 Months Later isn’t confirmed just yet, but the movie does appear to be on the right track at last.

The 28 Months Later title seems like the natural next step for the zombie franchise, something acknowledged by Garland during the interview when asked about the title. “It’s more likely to be 28 Months than 28 Years. 28 Years gives you one more place to go. 28 Decades is probably taking the piss.”
