In the past, Adam McKay has said that he won’t make a third Anchorman movie, but his attitude appears to have changed in recent months. In a recent interview, the filmmaker was asked about where the next instalment could jump forward in time a little to tackle the internet age of journalism, focusing on blogs, listicals (who doesn’t love those?) and the like.

“That was what we kind of talked about. We talked about doing one that was about the rise of the new media. I also thought there was something to the idea, and who knows, maybe we will do one some day.” That would no doubt be amazing, and it’s not hard to picture the kind of antics Ron and the team would get up to given the chance to surf the Internet!

However, that’s not the only idea McKay has had. “I also thought it’d be cool to have Ron Burgundy get embedded in the Iraq War. We kicked around that idea. But we’ve never got that serious about it, but it would have to be the next stage of what the media has become. And I think you’re right, I think it’s the Internet. The only thing is by then Burgundy would be getting pretty old. So maybe it’s a movie we make in 10 years, when Will’s aged up and it actually makes sense that you can set it in 1997 or ’98.” We could be waiting a while then!

Another Anchorman movie feels like an inevitability, especially as the sequel was a rousing success. Of course, with McKay wrapping up work on The Big Short and the very likely possibility of him returning to Marvel to write Ant-Man and The Wasp with Paul Rudd, he has a very busy schedule moving forward. Here’s hoping he makes time for Anchorman though!
