Black Mass tells the true story of Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf. However [SPOILER ALERT] after the Feds closed in on their targets, they double crossed Bulger and ultimately prosecuted him, along with his partner in crime and the original FBI agent working with him.
After starring a string of critical and commercial failures, Johnny Depp needs a hit, and based on what we see here…well, it doesn’t seem like a stretch to say that the actor might be a hot favourite come awards season!
Johnny Depp’s physical transformations have become less and less fun to watch over the years, but this really does look like the right kind of performance from the talented actor. Hopefully Black Mass will turn things around for him, especially after the reception to movies like Mortdecai and The Lone Ranger.
Directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart), Black Mass is set to be released this September and has an amazing cast which also includes Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Jesse Plemons, Peter Sarsgaard, Dakota Johnson, and Corey Stoll.
