The first full trailer for The Impossible debuted last week, and was every bit as powerful as we expected. Heading for its world debut at TIFF early next month, we’re expecting this to be a strong contender come awards season.

The film, based on a true story, stars Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts in the leads, along with Tom Holland, Oaklee Pendergast, and Samuel Joslin as their children, and with its Spanish release coming in October, a new poster and image have now made their way online.

“Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand, looking forward to a few days in tropical paradise. But on the morning of December 26th, as the family relaxes around the pool after their Christmas festivities the night before, a terrifying roar rises up from the center of the earth. As Maria freezes in fear, a huge wall of black water races across the hotel grounds toward her. Based on a true story, THE IMPOSSIBLE is the unforgettable account of a family caught, with tens of thousands of strangers, in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time. But the true-life terror is tempered by the unexpected displays of compassion, courage and simple kindness that Maria and her family encounter during the darkest hours of their lives. Both epic and intimate, devastating and uplifting, THE IMPOSSIBLE is a journey to the core of the human heart.”

Acclaimed Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) is behind the camera, marking a very promising second feature, reteaming with Sergio G. Sánchez, who penned the script.

The Impossible will debut at TIFF in early September, and will then head to the US for 21st December, following its 11th October release in Spain, putting it in perfect position for a run at the Oscars. Here in the UK, it will be released on 4th January, 2013, and I don’t know about you, but I know what my first film of the New Year is going to be. For now, here are the new poster and image, both of which you can click to enlarge.
