Friends, we meet again. We in Covent Garden, on the bustling red carpet and secreted deep within the Escheresque backstage corridors of the Royal Opera House, and you in homes and tents around the world urgently refreshing this very page to discover who has won what at the 2016 British Academy Film and Television Arts awards.

The BAFTAs are here, and we’re delighted you join us.

As is usual we won’t be tweeting the winners out as the ceremony isn’t broadcast live. We’ll update our master list of nominations below with the winners and providing a commentary on whose speech was the best, smartest haircut, most polished shoes and so on.

Latest updates at the top of the page – Refresh to see the latest update. The winners will be updated below in bold.

21:26 – There we are – the end of the 2016 BAFTAs – a fine night for The Revenant, not so for Carol. Mad Max did amazingly and Leo finally got his award. Thank you for those who joined in – same time next year?

21:17 Right! BEST FILM TIME! We’re almost there… let’s see who it is…

There’s a surprise – Tom Cruise comes out to present the Best Film award – smooth as a silken tie sluicing its way through a slither of sea lions on a slippery slope. (I think I’m losing it a little…)

The Revenant wins it! It’s clearly Innaritu’s night. A wonderful piece of cinema – very glad it won.

21:12 Julianne Moore has laryngitis and sounds even better than ever – and being a trooper presenting the Best Actor award. Will this be Leo’s year?

It is! Huge cheer – Leonardo DiCaprio wins it, and gives a very gracious speech.

21:06 – Sacha Baron Cohen is on stage presenting the Best Actress award. Will it be Blanchett…

Brie Larson wins! That’s yet another slap in Carol’s face, but can’t help feel pleased at this win.

21:01 We’re in the home straight now. Best Director time…Alejandro G. Iñárritu wins it! Does that mean Leo’s win is on the cards…

20:51 Sir Sidney Poitier is awarded the BAFTA Fellowship. It’s to my great shame that I didn’t know he directed Stir Crazy.

20:47 Production Design! WHO WILL WIN…

IT WINS! IT LEAVES! IT WINS AGAIN! Mad Max Fury Road.

20:40 Carrie Fisher and Domhnall Gleeson are presenting the Film not in the English Language…

An odd moment on stage before handing out the award to…Wild Tales (you can read our review here).

20:34 Cuba Gooding Jr. leaps on stage (not really, I just can’t get his energetic play out of my mind) He’s here for Original Screenplay…after handing a rose to Stephen Fry.

The winner is… Spotlight. Great to see that film picking up awards. Also good to see that there’s no clear winner tonight.

20:27 Cate Blanchett is on stage, thrusting down the golden head to present the award for Outstanding British contribution to Cinema to Angels Costumes.

20:24 Now there’s another award – Angry Dr. Bassett (Angela to her friend) is doing something quite extraordinary on stage before handing out the Adapted Screenplay award.

The winner is… The Big Short… that’s… a surprise.

20:22 The In Memoriam reel just played and man, it’s been a hard, hard year.

20:14 The Outstanding Debut award is up next – Dakota Johnson and Will Poulter are talking about it expectant of a decision…

The Theeb team win it – writer/director Naji Abu Nowar and producer Rupert Lloyd

Have to say I’m surprised Ex Machina looks like it’s going home empty handed.

20:10 Costume! Will this be another Mad Max win? Let’s see…

Yes! Mad Max Fury road takes it home! Carol is being left with nothing at the moment…

20:03 Muddy Redwine is up on stage to present the Best Supporting Actress.

Kate Winslet Wins it – there’s your tabloid headline. The Academy seem to be erring on the side of the British this year…

20:01 HOW DID MINIONS get a nomination?! MADNESS…

Best animation goes to Inside Out of course. Great music too.

19:54 Rebel Wilson’s speech is the best yet. Seriously that’s one to look out for. Best Supporting Actor time…

and Steven Spielberg steps up to collect the award for Mark Rylance. Bit of a surprise, but nice for the British Academy to be celebrated their own.

19:49 EE Rising Star award is next up. Last years Jack O’Connell is presenting…

Boyega wins it! Get ready for a great speech…

19:44 VFX OK? And it’s Star Wars The Force Awakens. Thought Ex Machina again… Glad I didn’t put money down. Here’s our interview with one of the winners, Chris Corbould. Check out our red carpet with him later on.

19:41 Hear that? It’s the sound of The Revenant winning the Best Sound award.

19:39 Editing! They cut! They spool! THEY CUT AGAIN! Mad Max Fury Road wins it again.

19:33 It’s all happening here – Best British Short film goes to Operator, a kickstarted short – is that a first? Edmund wins the Best Short Animation. I’d write more but they’ve already moved on! So here’s our interview with the directors Emilie Jouffroy and Nina Gantz.

19:30 Morricone wins for Best Original Music. Sent a rather sweet, and necessarily self-enthused note. Maestro indeed.

19:27 Amy wins Best Documentary. Always was going to happen – great speech too.

19:19 Make up, Hair and Cinematography up next, two awards – not one big one.

Hair and Make-Up went to Mad Max Fury Road! – Very gracious speech and a popular win.

Cinematography goes to The Revenant – Lubeszki wins!

19:12 – First award time – the Best British Film award – Idris Elba and Kate Winslet are taking the lead.

Brooklyn is the Outstanding British Film – we thought Ex Machina would get it – not so!

19:05 There are doing Kiss-cams now – Leonardo DiCaprio and Maggie Smith just went at it, Julianne Moore and Bryan Cranston went at it but the highlight was Eddie Izzard and Rebel Wilson.

19:02 There was a wonderful moment when Fry told John Boyega he was his father – expect a GIF of that moment very soon…

18:59 Stephen Fry is on stage being wonderful.

18:45 WE’RE ABOUT TO BEGIN. Stay here for everything.

18:21 More people have arrived. Matt Damon is here. Rebel Wilson is here. How’d ya like them apples? etc. Don’t worry – it’s nearly time.

18:13 Her Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio joins her on the carpet. There’s room for them both. Unlike at the end of Titanic. Shame.

17:57 If Kate Winslet ever gets any more down to earth she’d be crawling up these red carpets in future.

17:52 Steven Spielberg is on the carpet. He didn’t ride up on a BMX with Tom Hanks riding in the basket at the front. Missed opportunity.

17:49 Bryan Cranston is talking about acting in the bath. Didn’t know he did soaps.

17:46 Michael Fassbender updates on Assassin’s Creed – barely any green screen – he’s very excited for it. Stand by for more…. oh, oh no he’s gone. Beardwatch – almost imperceptible.

17:41 People are still arriving. Oh! There’s Cate Blanchett! Ooo! There’s Taron Egerton! Blimey, it’s Derek Griffiths… if only…

17:38 Former Doctor Matt Smith has arrived and is signing photos of him…. well, you get the idea.

17:35 Michael Fassbender has arrived and is signing photos of himself bring thrust at him with people pleading for his signature. Do you think that when he was a small boy he thought he’d be on a cold London street in an artificial haze scribbling his name on pictures of himself? It’s a strange world.

17:30 Bryan Cranston has arrived and is signing photos of himself bring thrust at him with people pleading for his signature. Do you think that when he was a small boy he thought he’d be on a cold London street in an artificial haze scribbling his name on pictures of himself? It’s a strange world.

17:25 More people have arrived! The carpet is literally underfoot. Beardwatch – some dude had a shaved head and a full sea-captain’s beard. Kudos.

17:15 John Boyega is a legend. It’s true. Starts filming Star Wars Episode VIII tomorrow…

17:08 Just to manage expectations you this frantic updating won’t keep going like this until the actual event begins. It’s a red carpet – there’s not a lot of action. Bel Powley’s very nice though – and wearing a dress too – that’s enough fashion nonsense from us.

17:03 – There are red carpet interviews happening right now but the scrum hasn’t begun yet. Beardwatch so far: Trim.

17:00 The carpet is down, the crowds are lining in and we’re about an hour or so away from anything actually happening. Tea, anyone?
