The results of the television awards ceremony of the year are always something to look forward to – the quality of the small screen has only been improving over the past decade or two, and it’s nice to see credit given where credit’s due.

Mad Men, Modern Family, Downton Abbey, Breaking Bad, Sherlock, and 30 Rock led this year’s nominations, and it’s Modern Family and Homeland that have come away with the most wins, taking four awards apiece.

Homeland has been one of the most talked-about dramas over the past year, and leading stars Damian Lewis (doing a Hugh Laurie, being an English actor playing an American on US TV) and Claire Danes came away with the Leading Actor/Actress prizes in the dramatic categories.

Modern Family continues its reign as the best comedy in recent years, and dominated the Supporting Actor/Actress awards in the comedy categories, with Julie Bowen and Eric Stonestreet taking the two awards last night.

I continue to be surprised that Jon Hamm is yet to win the Leading Actor in a Drama award for his role as Donald Draper in Mad Men, but there’s always next year.

HBO took home the most awards amongst the networks, with six wins to its name, closely followed by ABC and CBS with five each, and then Showtime and FX with four.

The ceremony, a rough equivalent of the Academy Awards for television in the US, was held last night and hosted by the ever-brilliant Jimmy Kimmel. For a full list, you can head over to the official Emmys site, and here’s a run-down of the biggest categories:
