7. Ben Reilly, a.k.a. The Scarlet Spider

Back in the 90s, there was a Spider-Man story so convoluted and confusing that it eventually spiraled out of control and had to be wrapped up as quickly as possible by its writers before the character of Peter Parker was irreversibly damaged for good.

The basic premise was that Peter Parker’s clone – Ben Reilly – was in fact the REAL Spider-Man, leading to the former deciding to give up the mantle to focus on his relationship with Mary Jane Watson. That’s a brief and oversimplified explanation, but a loose adaptation could actually work in a future movie and lead to a new actor (who would obviously have to look VERY similar to Andrew Garfield if he wasn’t willing to play this version of Spidey) heading up an interesting new spinoff.
